Bag End Lego Set.

I hate Lego so much, so often.  You know this set is going to cost much more than it's worth but regardless here it is, it's beautiful and you don't even get all the Dwarves.

  1. I hate Lego, but it's more about how they treat a lot of their customers, more than it is about the prices of their sets.

The implication from WIPO is the Lego has a copyright on just the word "Lego". I am not sure about this, but they probably do. However, there is being protective of one's copyright, and then there is just being practical from a business standpoint.

After doing some research, it has been alleged that Lego has sued or filed complaints even more than Google or Microsoft has in certain years. This makes Lego look more like a cypher bully than someone who is just trying to protect their copyright.

Lego is stupid. The vast majority of Lego websites provide information about Lego and their products. Their domain name, while containing the word ‘lego’ look nothing what-so-ever like http://www.lego.com or any of it’s sub directories.

This is just ridiculous to go after every website that you can find that contain the word lego.

Now for the stupidity of Lego.
Number one. Any website that is about Lego is free advertising for Lego.

Number two. A big percentage of these domains are owned by Lego enthusiast, which in turn mean, they are owned by Lego customers who give Lego a great amount of business.

Number there. These are also websites that help other Lego enthusiast in ways that Lego can’t and / or chooses not to, thereby relieving Lego of customer support that might otherwise be demanded of Lego.

And these are the people that Lego wants to sue??? It’s amazing that a company as large as Lego lacks this much business sense and this much apathy toward the very people ( their customers ) who keep them in business.

  2. Trademark law says that if you don't protect a trademarked logo/name/term you lose the trademark(because it becomes general vernacular, which can't be trademarked). So if Lego didn't go after these sites they'd eventually lose the copyright on the term.

It's not an insane premise either. The following names all used to be trademarks but the companies lost the rights because they didn't protect the term strongly enough:
    - Escalator
    - Aspirin
    - Zipper
    - Kerosene
    - Yo-yo
    - Thermos

And the special bonus trademark in the "seriously?" category:
    - Heroin
