Newell/Abrams DICE 2013 Keynote. Valve Movies.

JJ Abrams and Gabe Newell gave the DICE 2013 keynote address today.  They talk about a lot of things but what people care most about is that they announced, together, there are Half-Life and Portal movies in development.

Of all the movies based on games, these ones have the best chance at being great.  Mostly because Valve is a huge entity and could probably fund the movies themselves depending on the scale of them.  With Abrams behind them I have a bit more faith.  I don't think he's amazing but I also don't think he is a slave for the Hollywood dollar.

Check out the full DICE transcript here

Polygon has two articles, here and here that give more insight into the whole affair.

Gabe Newell Talks "Steam Box."

Valve is moving into the console market. Sort of. Basically Valve thinks it sucks that you can't buy an affordable PC to hook up to your TV and play games without a lot of effort. So they're making one. In the article here, Gabe talks all about the box and how bad it's going to make consoles look.

Below is just a concept of what it could look like, apparently there are many working models.  Regardless, hope this is a huge success, which makes Microsoft and Sony think twice about their business model.

Valve News!

Lots of bits of news from Valve last night from GTTV.

First is their non-video game product will be a DoTA 2 documentary.

Second bit is there will be a Zombie Mod on the date of release for CS:GO.

3rd is Valve is releasing something called Big Picture Mode which is going to be an interface between computer and television to play your games. It will also allow the use of controllers, not sure if that means any controller like a PS3 or Xbox one though.

Lastly a CS:Go Launch Trailer.

Portal Animated Short.

Fan made of course but here are some stills.  You can check out his dA page here where he'll post more information about it.  Looks pretty incredible already, if this guy doesn't work at Valve by the end of the year then I'm pretty sure the majority of the population is going to be homeless sooner than later.

Hidden DOTA 2 Updates.

it seems there are a few things in the latest DOTA 2 patch that haven't been activated yet. Here's a list:

New Announcers

Dr. Kleiner
If you don't know who Doctor Kleiner is, he's the bald scientist from the Half-Life series, you may remember him best from HL2, he is the one always chasing after Lamar the headcrab.

There's also a Juggernaut and Nature's Prophet announcer files, if they are actual replaces for the current announcer or just placeholders, it's hard to say.

It seems like they're also going to be adding taunts into the game which are both vocal and physical.

Also being added are different courier models.

This is a mini Pudge ^.^

And there are also a ton of new cosmetic items for both the Juggernaut and Nature's Prophet which you can see below at the via.

Finally, the best piece to come out of all this.  An Orca skin for the TideHunter!!!

Most likely all these items will either be things that can be bought or gained through unlocking achievements or random drops.  Some may be temporary items but who knows.

Rumored Valve Console.

About 3 weeks ago, there was a blip on the radar about Valve making hardware. Gabe said in an interview that if they have to they will. Didn't say if he meant console or controller or something else. Over this weekend there have been 4 posts on Kotaku about the "Steam Box." The first story here talks about a console that would run pc games on whatever and also run Steam.

Next we have a is this a photo of the Steam Box? Take this link to read the full story and a picture below.

3rd is a controller concept, looks like an Xbox controller.  The full news story here.

Finally here is Kotaku's complete round up of all the news and their speculations and opinions.

Personally, I think a "Console" that people buy for under $400 that plays PC games on great settings without any lag is an amazing idea.  I'm a PC gamer and I fear the future upgrades that I'll need.  Why is PC gaming the best?  It's not because of anything you'd hear from someone playing Counter-Strike, it's about the freedom that the PC allows that the console makers won't give their customers.

DICE Interview: Double Fine, Valve, Bethesda

This is a long 40 minute video, that features Tim Schaffer and others, talking about game development. They touch on subjects such as modding, breaking into the industry, marketing for games and others. I apologize for the douche (aka the interviewer) on the far right in advance.
